Looking better, we notice that actually the struts have lengths which are similar, but not identical, and here begin all the magic behind the complicity of realizing a geodesic dome. The geodesic dome is a structure based on a collection of triangles which, by staying in a state of tension, together forms in the space a hypothetical sphere.
The sides of the triangles could be identical, forming equilateral triangles, or different, having from two different lengths to infinite. The structure becomes more and more sphere-like as the number of the diverse sizes of the struts increases. Although Buckminster Fuller developed the geodesic sphere using a sheet of paper and a pen, an easy way to calculate and to verify the stability of the dome is by using the abilities of the computer. In our era, the variety of software which allows us to model three dimensional digital shapes brings us to the same result in different and interesting ways.
In the first part of this paper I will try to explain what a geodesic dome actually is and how it works. The second part will be a tutorial for realizing a 3-D digital geodesic dome.
Following that we will try to transform the geometric form we have created into an architecture discovering the thin limit between a simple geometry and a real architecture.
As previously explained, the dome is formed by a series of triangles. In case all the struts have identical length, they form together a geometry that is not exactly a semi sphere see figure 1. The knots will be always composed of five struts excluding the knots touching the ground, which will be made of four knots, in all types of domes. Figure 2 When the struts have three different lengths, the form is closely similar to a semi sphere see figure 3having always knots of four only on the groundfive and six struts.
Figure 3 We can continue to increase the number of the different struts, getting closer to a hypothetical semi sphere on one hand, but raising up the complicity of the dome on the other.
Image number 1 demonstrates a geodesic dome made of sixteen different struts. Image 1 The world of the 3-D technology is without a doubt fascinating and interesting. Its usage in recent years became almost essential for the projecting of complicated structures and luckily it saves us a lot of calculations.
Nowadays we can appreciate some architecture that could have been realized only thanks to these softwares, which allow us to achieve this level of complicity, which would be impossible to obtain otherwise. In this paper, the tutorial will focus on the realizing with Rhinoceros and its plug-ins Grasshopper and StructDrawRhino. An interesting fact about the geodesic dome is its influences on other worlds. Many games, for example, were developed on the geodesic dome law.
One of the most popular is the Geomag, which made of bars and balls creating triangles and squares. The balls are magnetic, so that the game combines together the geometrical proprieties of the geodesic dome and the magnetic force, allowing to build various shapes. It seems that Fuller arrived to the geodesic dome doing various experiments beginning with the overlap of regular solids on the sphere and following making models of the maximum circles which let him to check directly the stability of the triangle geodesic structures, until the conceiving of architectural structures which based on the maximum circles Gorman, The next step was to materialize it, so we can see, touch and build it, making sure of its stability and finding the synergy between the elements.
The simplest experiment to do is trying to materialize a sphere with toothpicks, which limits the game to identical struts. The last one is able to define the space taking up the maximum volume always using the toothpicksbut its shape is still too far from the sphere see figure 1- introduction. How can the shape become more spherical and still be stable, turning everything to a structure?Create a hexagonal dome structure and use the same steps for any other pattern.

The problem was that the model we received was nothing more than a collection of lines arranged into one grid pattern and lots of little mesh faces between these lines — no NURBS surfaces or anything else nice to work with!
The challenge was therefore threefold: recreate the NURBS surface, manipulate the surface into a structurally more efficient form think lots of non-zero Gaussian curvature and then apply a range of grids to it. You should now have roughly recreated the 3D shape of the dome. Split the base curve into two halves such that all lines are open curves and form a series of arches. I've actually managed to create the sphere.
The problem I'm facing now is that i can't offsetSrf it in order to give the shape thickness. The command failes on some faces. Do you maybe have a solution for that? Geometry Gym. Luckily I found some supporting files on the forum how to triangulate or voronoi-ate the basic surface, but some problems ocured on the way. When doing the triangulation, some triangles look like they should, and some on the corners looke more like a line then a triangle, so how could this be corected to get them more like equilateral triangles. The second ghx file is a script to voronoi the structure, similar problem: all the cells look too longitudinal, not very voroni-like.
I think the problem lies in the basic surface, because I modeled it with loft along some curves. I did not come up with a better idea how to model. Share Tweet Facebook Facebook. Views: I would suggest looking at Kangaroo for your dome structure. You should be able to create a planar mesh that follows the edge of your dome then apply an inverted gravity to the mesh points to create the dome shape, you'll need to also apply the surface of the dome as a ceiling to the inflation to match the shape of your original form, this should at least give you more regular divisions of the forms rather than mapping to the surface.
It also will give you something that is more structurally rationalized like a series of catenary curves.
